The power of music

I was just cleaning up the dishes after dinner, what a chore, but Anastacia definitely gave me a lift.  Whirling  and dancing around the kitchen cleaning up after dinner to the sound of “Not that kind” and “Who’s gonna stop the rain” is way more fun than to do it in silence, fussing children upstairs, just doing my job!

Who does not know the connection we have with some pieces of music? What reminds you of high school, a friend, a lover, a moment in time?

The goodnight songs I sing to Anna and Emily, my parents or grandmother sang to me when I was a little girl and theirs probably to them. The Christmas songs  or when we go hiking or are sitting in the car. They send me back and I revel in those memories.  Then Genesis and Phil Collins – all make me think of just one person – good and bad … Eric Clapton’s “Tears in heaven” for an old boyfriend, after I had just come over here. Sarah Mclachlan, “Angel” – loosing the first hope of a child, but “Building a Mystery” making it all better. Then lots of 80’s music bringing me right back to high school. And then Sting with his “Dreams of gold” with Michael …

Some mornings, I don’t turn on the radio and at some point find the nothingness screaming for a filler, something, while I am typing away on my computer. Then, it makes more sense, is more pleasant … does not feel like I am all alone in this house.

We know the power of music, uplifting, memory triggering, good or bad as it may, calming …

I am going upstairs now for the calming effect of a goodnight song for my children and for the soothing feeling that some things just don’t change in this crazy world ….
